Michel Azama became an actor (training with Simon and Jacques Lecoq) after pursuing literary studies. Successively a dramatist at the CDN in Dijon, then editor-in-chief of Les Cahiers de Prospero, he spends his time teaching (international workshops) and writing. He is an associate professor of literature and a drama professor. In 2006 he passed the teacher evaluator examination (inspecteur d’académie) and was appointed to a position in Caen.
His plays include: Vie et mort de Pasolini, Le Sas (Three Provinces Prize - France, Belgium, Canada - 1986), Croisades, Iphigénie ou le péché des Dieux, Aztèques, Les Deux Terres d'Akhenaton, Bled, Zoo de nuit ("Beaumarchais" Prize, 1994; Best Foreign Playwright Prize in Spain, 1999), Dissonances, Contes d'exil, Juliette, La Nuit américaine, Lettre d'Alcibiade, Faits divers, Saintes Familles (Amours fous, Anges du chaos, Saint Amour).
He was awarded First Prize by the City of Bourges in 1999 for his collective works.
His plays have been translated into English, Spanish, Italian, Swedish, Dutch, Portuguese, Catalan, German, Greek and Japanese. They have been staged in numerous countries in Europe, North and South America, and Asia.
He directed the three-volume Anthologie des auteurs dramatiques : De Godot à Zucco (éd. Théâtrales 2004).
His plays are published by éditions Théâtrales, l'Avant-Scène and Actes Sud-Papiers.
He was president of EAT (Ecrivains associés de théâtre) from 2003 to 2006.
