Actes du Théâtre N°81 March 2015

José Pliya was born in Cotonou, Benin in 1966.
After studying contemporary literature at the Sorbonne and earning a post-graduate degree in Paul Claudel’s plays, he took acting classes, staged plays, acted in independent productions, and also wrote.

In August 2003, he founded the association “ETC_Caraïbe” with the aim of promoting playwriting from the Caribbean.

In July 2005 he was named director general of Artchipel, Scène Nationale de la Guadeloupe.

As a playwright he was awarded the Prix du jeune théâtre André Roussin by the Académie Française in 2003 for Le Complexe de Thénardier and his collected works. He has written thirty plays, translated and staged on five continents by directors such as Denis Marleau (Quebec), Jean-Michel Ribes (France) and Hans Peter Cloos (Germany).

As a director he has staged his play Les Effracteurs at the Studio Théâtre in 2004 with actors from the Comédie Française, as well as Barack Obama’s A More Perfect Union speech at the Théâtre du Rond-Point (January 2009). In January 2011, he staged Mon petit poucet, for young audiences, then in January 2014, Monsieur, Blanchette et le Loup adapted from Daudet.

His latest staged production, currently on a national tour, is a theatrical adaptation of Carole Martinez’s novel Du domaine des murmures (Gallimard, Goncourt des lycéens 2011).
