Pierre Notte was born in 1969 in Amiens. He is a playwright, director and an arts consultant in high schools. He was named secretary general of the Comédie-Française in 2006 and left the position in 2009 to devote himself to his artistic work. He is currently an advisor and associate playwright at the Théâtre du Rond-Point.
Pierre Notte left school at the age of 17, staged Arthur Schnitlzer's La Ronde as well as his own plays, including La Maman de Victor (Special Jury Prize at the Festival de Théâtre de Lisy-sur-Ourcq, 1992), L’Ennui d’Alice devant les arbres and Plutôt rouge velours. He has written three books of poetry and photographs, and two novels: La Chanson de Madame Rosenfelt (édition Nadeau, 1993) and La Nuit irrésolue (édition Loris Talmart, 1998).
He has been writing plays since the early nineties, including most recently Et l’enfant sur le loup (dir. by Anne-Laure Liégeois, CDN de Montluçon 2009); Deux petites dames vers le Nord (dir. by Patrice Kerbrat, with Catherine Salviat and Christine Murillo, Théâtre de la Pépinière 2008, on tour in 2010; productions in Russia, Belgium and Japan); Les Couteaux dans le dos (dir. by Emmanuelle Bougerol, Avignon off 2007); J’existe( foutez-moi la paix), a cabaret (Paris, Les Déchargeurs, 2006).
Since August 2009 he has been the resident playwright at Les Déchargeurs. His play Les Couteaux dans le dos was the first production he staged there, in a version for five actresses. His first musical album, J’existe (et je danse) (published and produced by Les Déchargeurs / le pôle), was released in October, followed by a revival of the J’existe (foutez-moi la paix) cabaret show at the Théâtre du Rond-Point, and the openings of Cabaret des familles in November and Cabaret nottien in February 2010. His first play for children Bidules, trucs (dir. by Sylvain Maurice, April 2010) concluded the residency. The play was awarded a Fonds SACD Théâtre grant in June 2010 and is scheduled to open the 18 Septembrer 2010 (dir.by Sylvain Maurice, prod. by Les Déchargeurs, Théâtre La Bruyère). Et l’enfant sur le loup will open in 2011 at the Théâtre du Rond-Point (dir. by Patrice Kerbrat, 6 Jan – 13 Feb 2011 ; L’Avant-Scène Théâtre).
Since 2005 he has written the following radio plays for France Culture: C’est de l’être parti qu’il s’agit, Sombre précurseur-sitcom, L’État de Gertrud, Se mordre, Par la fenêtre ou pas and Et l’enfant sur le loup se précipite. In 2003 he was awarded a playwriting grant from the Centre National des Lettres. His play Moi aussi, je suis Catherine Deneuve was staged by Jean-Claude Cotillard, with support from the "Beaumarchais" association. It won the 2005 Theatre Prize from the Fondation Diane et Lucien Barrière. In 2006, his play won the Molière award for Best Private Theatre Production, and Pierre Notte was nominated for Best Playwright. The play was staged in Tokyo, Rome and Sofia. He was named the SACD Best New Theater Talent in 2006.
He is also the author of Journalistes – petits barbares mondains (Théâtre Tristan Bernard); Clémence à mon bras (Avignon Festival reading at the Musée Calvet). His plays are published by éditions des Quatre-Vents (L’Avant-Scène théâtre). Plays staged in Japan include Moi aussi, je suis Catherine Deneuve; Les Couteaux dans le dos; Deux petites dames vers le Nord and Pour l’amour de Gérard Philipe. Every year he performs in a singing recital in Tokyo with Marie Notte and Machiko Yanase at the piano, most recently in Dans la boue dans la boue, chantefable in 2008, and A la mémoire de Gérard Philipe in 2009.
A journalist since 1994, he has written for magazines such as Le Nouvel Observateur, L’Evénement du Jeudi, Paris-Photo, La Terrasse, Epok, Arts de la piste, and Théâtres for which he was the deputy editor-in-chief, then editor-in-chief.
Since 1998 he has been an arts consultant for the theater department at the Lycée Saint-Louis Saint-Clément in Viry-Châtillon.
He is a Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres.
