Les Aventures de Nathalie Nicole Nicole
Marion Aubert
Les Aventures de Nathalie Nicole Nicole
DR
Actes du théâtre n° 28.[ imprimer ]
Les Aventures de Nathalie Nicole Nicole is the story of a little girl possessed by the devil. Press clippings, letters, sketches, lies, scalpels and declarations ¨D all have been useful in dissecting Nathalie. Once I plunged into the bowels of my victim, I tried to uncover tendons of cruelty. Tubes of tenderness. Weird muscles. Then I plan to get rid of Nathalie¡¯s body and throw it away to a medical school. Such is my contribution to the progress of science.

¡®¡®Marion Aubert, who writes superb lines of acerbic wit, says she consulted Dante¡¯s Inferno in order to turn her ¡®¡®childish heroes¡¯¡¯ into ¡®¡®devilish children¡¯¡¯. It¡¯s easy to believe. Children are glibly cruel and brazenly mad. Their words come thick and fast. They invade the space, cross the stage, bounce back, hit the walls, come back to the sender and kill a few people in the process. Like collateral verbal damage. A frenzy of foul words, this great book of horrors is written in a poetic style where images and sounds call out and respond to each other (¡)Les Aventures de Nathalie Nicole Nicole is innovative, witty, funny, fast-paced and whimsical ¨D a fine play that is meant to be heard on stage.¡¯¡¯

NATHALIE We could build a city made for crazy children.
THE HANDY CHILD So says Nathalie.
NATHALIE A city of refuge.
BIG CHIEF MICHEL Yes. All the world’s crazy children could find refuge in our country.
NATHALIE Yes. We could exploit them.
BIG CHIEF MICHEL. Yes. We could force them to sew you a nightgown. To sew the night with the day. They’ll never be able to do it. They’ll always fail and never be validated. People will insult them and tell them they’re worthless. And incompetent. People will say ‘‘Poor things. You’re really no good with your hands.’’ They’ll make little remarks about them.
CLEO They’ll say ‘‘Poor things – you don’t have a clue about life’’, then they’ll whomp them.
BIG CHIEF MICHEL They’ll make up pathetic teams.
CLÉO They’ll put all the pathetic kids together.
NATHALIE And they’ll all think they’re pathetic.
BIG CHIEF MICHEL They won’t get anywhere in their lives.
CLÉO They’ll make a chorus of pathetic kids, then they’ll send them to other kingdoms to humiliate them.
BIG CHIEF MICHEL They’ll come back acting sheepish with their pathetic voices. They’ll never dare sing again.
CLÉO They’ll scream, and scratch their thighs out of bitterness.
CLÉO, BIG CHIEF MICHEL and NATHALIE We’ll be the abominable children from the crazy kingdom.
CLÉO Then we could suddenly love them, to make them even crazier. To make them totally sick.
BIG CHIEF MICHEL We’d pretend to be nice to them.
NATHALIE We could kiss them on the cheek.
BIG CHIEF MICHEL We’d say we’re sorry. We’d make them stupid. Then we’d throw them straight out into the world to die.
NATHALIE Yes.
THE HANDY CHILD So says Nathalie.
NATHALIE We’ll serve them bowls of dust for dinner.
BIG CHIEF MICHEL Then we’ll play the ukulele all night long to make them suffer. We’ll be insufferable kings.
NATHALIE Right. That’s it. That’s our Kingly programme.
THE HANDY CHILD So says Nathalie, then she shakes her rattle. She adjusts her crown, and does a little curtsey. Then she smiles graciously.
