Last night Axel invited his friends Jules and Antoine for dinner at a restaurant.
This morning he regrets paying the bill and asks them to reimburse him.
Antoine flips open his checkbook.
Jules flips his lid.
Over the course of the day the three friends, in the throes of a mid-life crisis at forty, start counting everything: their flaws, their wrinkles, their mistresses, their low blows and even their points in Ping-Pong.

“The portrait of a generation that is both subtle, funny and moving (...) this comedy has enjoyed a huge buzz.” A nous Paris

“You can't stop laughing. A clever and insightful play reminiscent of Art or Le Prénom, it draws on the full range of emotions.” Le Point

“Funny and delightful, this comedy is a must.” Pariscope

“In the same vein as Le Prénom this lively modern comedy of manners rings true in talking about the tribulations of today's forty-somethings.” Le Parisien

Opens at the Théâtre de la Gaîté Montparnasse, June 10,2016. Extended through December 2016.
Director: David Roussel. Cast: Sébastien Castro, Stéphan Guérin-Tillié and Clément Michel.

excerpt - act 1, scene 1

Axel, Jules and Antoine

AXEL I'm really sorry for last night. I don't know what got into me, I had a bit too much to drink and got carried away. I'm sorry. I had no intention of taking you out to dinner, no intention of paying the bill. It made no sense. So here's the thing, I wanted to ask you to pay me back.

The other two stare in disbelief.

AXEL I know, it must look kind of stupid to you this morning, but well, we drank a lot, got tanked up and I paid for no reason. So this morning I don't see why I should pay 480 euros just because I gave my credit card on a whim to the waitress, who wasn't even especially cute. I don't know what got into me, I'm sorry, it was foolish. So uh 480 divided by 3 ... 160. You don't mind? We can split it three ways, it's simpler.
All right? You don't mind?

JULES Are you serious?

AXEL ...

JULES Axel, are you serious?

ANTOINE He seems to be.

JULES You're not joking?

AXEL No.

JULES You invite us to dinner last night then this morning you tell us you regret it and we should split it three ways? Did I get that right? Are you serious?

AXEL Yes.

Antoine starts fumbling around in his pockets.

JULES Antoine, what are you doing?

ANTOINE I'm looking for my checkbook.

JULES Are you serious?

AXEL Are you going to keep asking us all day long if we're serious?

JULES You're not giving him a check, are you?

ANTOINE He wants us to pay him back, so I'm paying him back.
