Dramafest Festival | 01.08-04.09

Dramafest in Mexico (Mexico City and Merida) has devoted its 2016 program to France.

After the United Kingdom, Germany, Finland, the United States, Argentina, Chile, Spain and Australia, the Dramafest contemporary theater festival, held in Mexico in August and September, has devoted its 2016 program to France. The festival promotes contemporary playwriting, creating ties between French and Mexican artists.

In search of contemporary French plays for the festival, Aurora Cano found Entr'Actes's website and contacted the SACD International Promotion Division. After discussing the plays and playwrights we proposed those that corresponded to Dramafest's specific format. The festival staff then read, saw and chose from among our proposals, along with those from the French Institute in Mexico.

The results: a presentation of Mohamed El Khatib's Finir en beauté, a new staging of Frédéric Sonntag's George Kaplan by Mexican director Raquel Araujo, short monologues (or ones shortened for the occasion) by Pauline Peyrade and David Léon presented in "giant outdoor globes," staged readings of Joël Pommerat's Ma chambre froide and Enzo Cormann's Diktat.

While France is the guest of honor, the festival also aims to create further links between French and Mexican playwrights. Thus, a play by Mexican playwright Luis Felipe Fabre was staged by Benjamin Lazar and Thomas Gonzalez, and short Mexican plays were presented in the "giant globes" along with the French plays. Workshops were also held for young Mexican theater professionals. Enzo Cormann led a contemporary writing workshop and Mylène Lormier a clown workshop.

In Mexico City in August, the festival continued in Merida in early September. We hope that new opportunities and lasting links have been created between our two countries though the festival.
